Best MoisturizerBest Moisturizer
Patricia Wexler MD Dermatology Universal Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 30 ($39.50)

There’s no need for three separate products; this rich facial cream packs sunscreen, moisturizer, and antiaging ingredients like matryxil and argeriline. Use it on your face and neck.

vaseline-renewalBest Body Lotion
Vaseline Intensive Care Renewal Age Redefining Body Lotion ($3.99)

This daily body lotion has a potent mix of antiaging ingredients—collagen, proretinol, UV protection, and a hefty dose of alpha hydroxy acids—that have been proven to fight age spots, wrinkles, dryness, and dullness.

Best For: Dry or mature skin

neutro-sunblockBest Sunblock
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 55 ($9.49)

Lots of sunscreens promise they won’t feel greasy or oily, but this one really delivers. Micronized silica powder absorbs excess sunscreen oil, so it dries almost instantly. Helioplex technology stabilizes the potent UVA ingredient avobenzone, so it lasts extra long when exposed to sunlight. And it has oxybenzone, a powerful UVB sunscreen.

Best For: All skin types

OPIfeetBest Foot Cream
Feet by OPI Double Coverage ($12.95)

Your feet won’t slide across the floor or feel clammy in your shoes after applying this fast-drying foot cream (thanks to its star ingredient, cotton powder). Shea butter and silicone create a silky layer without feeling tacky, while peppermint protects against odor.

Best For: Dry or callused feet

PXeyecreamBest Eye Cream
Prescriptives Intensive Rebuilding Eye Cream ($65)

Pat this cream on clean skin twice a day, and after a month the skin around the eye area will look plumped and smoother. Ingredients include caffeine to decrease inflammation and hyaluronic acid to bind moisture. It also has hexapeptides, proteins that boost the production of collagen and elastin.

Best For: All skin types

avenocleanserBest Facial Cleanser
Aveeno Ultra-Calming Foaming Cleanser ($6.99)

Too often, gentle cleansers are so gentle you don’t feel like your face is getting clean. But this unscented, soap-free foam lifts away dirt and makeup while also treating irritation in dry, sensitive skin with feverfew, a natural calming agent.

Best For: Normal to dry skin

lemonmanicureBest Hand Treatment
Carol’s Daughter Lemon Ginger Mint Manicure in a Jar ($10)

The natural butters and oils in this cream are mixed with sea salt to exfoliate dead skin from hands and cuticles while buffing nails at the same time. Beeswax seals in moisture, and peppermint oil leaves a clean, tingly feeling.

derma-doctor1. Blemish treatment: DERMAdoctor Ain’t Misbehavin’ Medicated Acne Control Serum. Finally, an acne product made for you, not your teenager. This oil-free serum has a multiprong attack for battling breakouts: It exfoliates, provides oil-control, and combats bacteria and inflammation. Best of all, it doesn’t leave skin feeling scaly. ($45)

loreal-skin-genesis2. Eye product: L’Oréal Paris Skin Genesis Daily Treatment Eye Serum. We’re happy to report that our judges’ top anti-aging eye cream will only set you back $20. This lightweight serum mixes Pro-Xylane, an all-natural hydrating derivative of the beech tree, and moisture-drawing hyaluronic acid to lessen puffiness, smooth lines, and diminish discoloration. ($19.99)

skinceuticals-cream  3. Facial sunscreen: SkinCeuticals Active UV Defense SPF 15. Pack this in your gym bag (and your glove compartment, and your handbag …). This water-resistant formula is one of only a handful of brands that contain Mexoryl SX—the most effective short-wave UVA blocker on the market, explains judge Lisa M. Donofrio, MD, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine. Add in the sunscreens avobenzone and octocrylene, which protect against long-wave UVA rays and the full UVB range, and you’ve scored the perfect skin-saving trifecta. ($29)

revage-cream4. Anti-aging facial moisturizer: Elizabeth Arden Prevage Anti-Aging Night Cream. Skimping on sleep makes you look worn out and prevents skin from repairing the day’s damage. But this hydrating night cream, “evens the score,” says judge Sandra S. Tsao, MD, an associate program director for procedural dermatology at Harvard Medical School. “Idebenone, a proven topical antioxidant, softens lines while shea and cocoa butter moisturize,” she says. ($125)

aveda-lip-treatment  5. Lip treatment: Aveda Nourish-Mint Renewing Lip Treatment. All too often, lip treatments leave lips sticky, waxy, or smelling like medicine. Not this antioxidant-rich lip treatment. “Botanical emollients like jojoba absorb quickly, forming a smooth barrier on the lips, and this product’s mint aroma is refreshing rather than medicinal,” says judge Grace H. Pak, MD, a dermatologist with a private practice in New York City. ($15)

st-ives-cleanser6. Facial cleanser: St. Ives Elements Protective Cleanser. Not a fan of slathering on sunscreen in the morning? This facial wash, with an SPF of 10, lets you cleanse and protect in one step. Sunscreen is encapsulated in positively charged silica shells, which bind to negatively charged skin, preventing the vital sun protection from rinsing away. ($6.99)

boscia-tonic  7. Toner: Boscia Clear Complexion Tonic with Botanical Blast. Packed with sasa kurilensis water, which sterilizes acne-causing bacteria, this toner brightens your complexion by reducing redness, soothing blemishes, and cleansing pores. ($19)

clinique-self-sun1. Self-tanner: Clinique Touch of Bronze Moisturizing Body Lotion. Many self-tanners are drying, but this one actually makes your skin hydrated and soft. “It contains glycerin, sodium hyalutonate, and sacaride isomerate, all of which help lock in moisture, leaving the skin more supple,” judge Tsao says. It’s also chock-full of protective antioxidants like aloe and vitamin E. ($18.50)

avoplex-cuticle-oil2. Nail product: OPI Avoplex Cuticle Oil to Go. This supermoisturizing serum replenishes dry skin with vitamin E, avocado, sunflower, sesame, and kukui nut oils—all without making you feel greasy. Our judges loved the easy-to-apply, portable tube—just give a little squeeze and the product flows between brush bristles for even distribution. ($7.50)

organic-wear-bronzer  3. Bronzer: Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Bronzer. This dual-tone palette, packed with 100 percent all-natural ingredients, wicks away oil while also moisturizing, judge Tsao says. Rice silk, cornstarch, and jojoba oil protect the skin against environmental assaults, while leaving it with a natural, sun-kissed appearance. Available in six shades, making this winner great for a range of skin tones. ($13.95)

neutrogena-sunblock  4. Body sunscreen: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunblock SPF 70. Before you step into the sun, protect yourself with this quick-absorbing (and odorless!) sunblock. With a cover-all-your-bases SPF 70, this water- and sweatproof UVA-UVB formula is noncomedogenic, oil-free (essential if you’re acne-prone), and PABA-free (key if you’re allergic), judge Tsao says. Plus, the spray bottle makes full-body coverage a breeze. ($9.99)

lubriderm-body-lotion5. Body moisturizer: Lubriderm Intense Skin Repair Body Lotion with Itch Relief. Slather on this nongreasy fragrance-free lotion to combat dry skin caused by environmental stressors. (Think sun, wind, etc.) Glycerin binds water to the skin for long-lasting moisture, while oat extracts and shea butter help to calm any dry, itchy, or irritated patches. ($6.99)

roc-hand-repair  6. Hand care: RoC Retinol Correxion Hand Repair SPF 15. The retinol in this nongreasy moisturizing cream fades age spots and improves hand texture. SPF 15 protects against future sun damage, judge Lisa M. Donofrio says. ($14.99)

zia-skin-basics7. Exfoliating body product: Zia Natural Skincare Bamboo Exfoliant. Green beauty gets high tech: Infused with bamboo—a renewable resource—this paraban-free exfoliant sloughs off dead skin, while yucca extract hydrates and rice bran revives your skin’s natural luster. ($24.95)

vaseline-foot-cream  8. Foot care: Vaseline Intensive Rescue Healing Foot Cream. Give dry soles the boot with this exfoliating alpha hydroxy acid–rich cream that smoothes and softens rough feet. “The hypoallergenic blend also contains emollient properties like glycerin to curtail moisture loss,” judge Donofrio says. ($3.99)

burts-bees-body-wash9. Body wash: Burt’s Bees Naturally Nourishing Milk & Shea Butter Body Wash. Hot showers can be a nightmare for our skin because they strip away protective lipids. This shower wash uses shea butter and safflower emollients to lock in moisture, leaving skin soft and healthy, judge Sandra S. Tsao says. ($8 )

Americas Healthiest Buys 2008 Beauty

ah-beautyTen years ago, we noticed more and more products promising health and beauty, so we put together a panel of dermatologists to select the best. A decade later, the bar is still being raised, as you can tell by our 2008 beauty winners. You don’t have to go far to find these favorites; most are at drugstores and department stores nationwide.

Lisa M. Donofrio, MD, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine, was glad to see diversity in the products on the shelves. “Companies are really starting to take into consideration a wider range of ethnicities and age groups,” Donofrio says.

Grace H. Pak, MD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist with a private practice in New York City, was excited by the increasing number of green products. Beauty companies “are all using botanical ingredients and more recycled material for packaging,” Pak says.

Sandra S. Tsao, MD, an associate program director for procedural dermatology at Harvard Medical School, was impressed with the reduction of potential allergens in products. “This makes more products accessible to even the most sensitive individuals,” Tsao says.

Warm olive oil can soothe your child’s (or your) achy ear, says Rachel Lewis, MD, a pediatrician at Columbia University Medical Center. (Note: Only for kids 2 and up.) Use a syringe to place 2 to 4 drops of warm oil in ear (5 to 10 in your own). Follow up with doctor.

Stainless steel appliances are magnets for fingerprint smudges. Make those marks vanish by applying a very light layer of olive oil with a soft cloth in a circular motion, says Catherine Houska, consultant to the Specialty Steel Association.

Dry-hair conditioner  Dry-hair conditioner
Revive damaged hair with this treatment from John Masters of John Masters Organics hair- and skin-care lines: Saturate hair with extra-virgin olive oil, then wrap with a warm towel for 20 minutes. Shampoo, rinse, and condition if needed.

Skin sootherSkin soother
Olive oil’s essential fatty acids are a natural Rx for rough elbows, hands, and cuticles, says dermatologist Lisa Donofrio, MD, of the Yale University School of Medicine. Nightly, rub a small amount of the extra-virgin variety into parched skin.
